Sailing a tall ship is a great adventure. It’s much easier than you would imagine to fund these voyages so don’t let the initial cost put you off.

Each year hundreds of young people take part in wonderful tall ships adventures aboard classic sailing vessels like the TS Pelican.

It costs around £1,200 to join the Pelican for a 10-day voyage. Add £300 to cover spending money, insurance and travelling to and from the ship and the final cost will be nearer £1,500.

You may not need to find the whole cost yourself because you can apply for bursary funding from Adventure Under Sail, the charity that operates TS Pelican.

But you will still need to raise funds and the best way to do that is to plan ahead – break up your £1,500 fundraising target into small monthlychunks.

Get started as soon as you can! Use the quieter winter months to raise the funds for your voyage.

Birthdays are an obvious source of cash gifts but they will only get you so far.

Adventure Under Sail has a special fundraising pack that tells you the best ways to generate cash – such as letters to sponsors or fundraising events like a quiz, BBQ, raffle, football tournament, garage sale or swimathon.

You will need to tell your potential sponsors about all the benefits and why a voyage aboard the Pelican is much more than merely a holiday.

So tell them how the challenge and adventure of a voyage aboard TS Pelican will:
•    improve your self sufficiency
•    boost your independence and initiative
•    hone your key life skills
•    help you to work better with other people
•    help you to make a positive contribution to society.

Adventure Under Sail and TS Pelican are recognised by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) so you will be sailing with a great crew.

Tall ships adventures are not just for young people though. Lots of adults enjoy tall ship holidays aboard the Pelican as a way to escape the stress of modern life.

Businesses also book Pelican for corporate sailing events. For more information about tall ships adventures, please contact Adventure Under Sail, +44 (0)1305 839476.
