Part one of this three-part series highlights the city’s competitive advantage as a manufacturing hub.

Shantou’s toy industry benefits from the city’s strategic location and extensive transportation system, fortifying its position as a key sourcing base and one of China’s five special economic zones.

Lying along the east coast of Guangdong province and south of the Hanjiang River delta region, the hub is a vital import, export and commodity distribution center. The port is connected to 272 harbors in 58 countries across the globe and can handle nearly 30 million tons of cargo.

In addition, the area is linked to other major cities via the Guangzhou-Meizhou-Shantou train line and the Shantou-Fenshui highway, which reaches Shenzhen and Xiamen. Further, the Shantou Waisha Airport accommodates 46 domestic and international flights weekly.

Because of the close proximity to Shenzhen, which is also a noted economic zone, both cities play critical roles in each other’s development, particularly for the toy sector. To illustrate, many RC model makers set up their headquarters in Shenzhen because of the more open and innovative business environment. Their R&D and production facilities, however, remain in Shantou to take advantage of the lower labor and land rates.

With a total area of 2,064sqkm, Shantou has six administrative districts and one county. Among them, the district of Chenghai is known as China’s key manufacturing center for toys and gifts. About 95 percent of the city’s plaything companies are found here. And as the brand-building base of Guangdong, strategies are carried out to promote the region’s competitiveness and highlight outstanding releases.

Further, the locale hosts an annual international toys and gifts fair with the help of organizations such as the Chenghai Toy Technology Innovation Center and the Chenghai Toy Association. The event has been one of the nation’s most important trade shows since 1999.

Toys contribute significantly to total output

The toy industry occupies a decisive position in the economic development of Shantou, with yearly production exceeding $3.2 billion. This accounts for more than 35 percent of the city’s overall estimated sales and at least 20 percent of China’s plaything shipments.

About 70 percent of the hub’s revenue from the line comes from abroad. Annual export growth rates have maintained double-digit figures since 2003, with increases particularly staying above 20 percent beginning 2007. Outbound deliveries amounted to $670 million in 2010, rising 25 percent YoY. Further, foreign transactions totaled $380 in 1H11, improving about 30 percent compared to the same period last year.

At present, the city’s toy makers cater to customers in more than 110 countries. Among the top markets are the ASEAN, the US, the EU and Japan. Shipments to the first area climbed about 27 percent in just the first six months of 2011.

The city’s plaything sector consists of 3,000 small and midsize suppliers. Together, these businesses have created at least 6,000 patented products, and four national and 10 provincial brands.

Your Questions About Toddler Developmental Stages

Mandy asks…

what is the best play mat?

we have decided what to get the family of little boys we are getting christmas gifts for.

the main thing we are looking for is a play mat that can be used throughout the toddler years for the newborn (first they lay on their back and pull the toys, then stomach, then sit, then use it for cruising). what is a good one that is decently priced?

also we are looking for riding toys for the bigger kids. what riding toys would be appropriate for the 11 month old and 2 1/2 year old? we want to get them one each that would fit their developmental stage.
we are going to toys r us.. i just want to know what would be some good models to look at for each child.

admin answers:

Go to the baby depot at Burlington Coat Factory. They have a wonderful variety of toys, books, and baby supplies. They have more than one brand of playmats, and their prices are decent, especially at christmas time. We did alot of christmas shopping there when our kids were babies. As for playmats I like the baby einstien designs. It seems to be more entertaining, also, i’ve noticed that the newer mats are smaller than the ones from 5 years ago, pick a larger size, since babies grow fast. They have riding toys and learning toys that can’t be found at walmart or target, which is why I like the Burlington Baby Depot when I need to get childrens presents. And toys r us is more expensive by the way.

Joseph asks…

My almost-12 month old won’t/can’t eat “table/toddler” food. His dr. isn’t concerned. So why am I?

My son isn’t excited about eating solids really at all. Occasionally when we are in a restaurant, he will want something to occupy himself with (foodwise), but it seems he would be content to simply breastfeed almost exclusively yet. We seat him at the family table and we all eat dinner together (me, husband, and him), and I usually eat breakfast with him as well– and by this, I mean whatever little he will eat. I don’t want to force food on him or start a power struggle, but he just doesn’t seem to want anything. What little food he does take is smooth puree– seems to hate the 3rd stage foods, so we don’t really go that route anymore. And I have tasted everything I feed him– it’s not as if I’m trying to make him eat something really gross. We offer little bits of our (appropriate) food, and he just thinks it is for mushing, messing, and throwing off the highchair to the dog. If something makes it into his mouth and it doesn’t totally dissolve (like steamed peas or rice), he gags frequently. He has 5 teeth.

I know I shouldn’t be comparing my kid to others, but my friends with same-age babies are eating whole grean beans, string cheese, and even PB&J sandwiches! My son just wants the boob. I’ve talked to the dr. about this, and she doesn’t seem to think it’s a big problem, as he will self-feed from time to time (puffs, graham goldfish, yogurt melts). He also uses a sippy cup for the occasional expressed breastmilk feeding when I’m not around, and a straw cup for water, and hitting all of his other developmental milestones (took first steps last week). He is approx. 50th percentile for both height and weight, so he’s obviously growing just fine. I am trying to live by the “food is for fun until age one” mantra, but his birthday is next week, and he still has no real desire to eat “real food.” So what can I do to just get over myself or perhaps make my son more interested in solids? He has his 12 month check-up at the end of this month and I plan to discuss this again with his pediatrician.

admin answers:

On one hand, this is fine, and very normal for a nursing 12mo. On the other…

“We offer little bits of our (appropriate) food, and he just thinks it is for mushing, messing…he will self-feed from time to time (puffs, graham goldfish, yogurt melts)”

Don’t give little bits of mushy stuff and don’t give garbage like the Gerber snacks. Give him…something appetizing, something with a bit of crunch. Cucumber, pita with hummus, even a tortilla chip loaded up with beans and guacamole. Honestly, and I mean no offence, but this sounds like a problem caused by the baby food aisle. Don’t shop there; it’s 99% crap and the remaining 1% is overpriced.

Don’t give tiny dice — give him something he has to gnaw/bite. A whole piece of toast, a stalk of steamed broccoli.

Don’t panic about gagging…

Sandra asks…

not going to sleep like he use to?

my son is 15 months and at 10 months i started to put him in bed awake and after four days he went to sleep within 10 mins of just fussing. and from then until know he has done just that, but just recently he has started to cry and scream again when i put him down.

what can the reason be , medical , developmental or just because hes getting to that stage of toddler hood?

admin answers:

I would say the stage of toddlerhood. My daughter is the same age and occasionally she will also cry when I walk out of her bedroom. I always put her to bed at 7:30pm, even if she is wired….she always ends up playing with her stuffed animals that are in her crib and then falls asleep. Just walk out of the room even if he is crying. If he continues to cry and he is hysterical go back in and reassure him that everything is alright. Continue to do this and eventually he will learn. Remember that sleep/bedtime is a learned behavior. A good book to pick up is “The Sleep Solution”. It worked wonders for me to establish the whole bedtime routine and even though its geared towards infants and it still useful for older babies.
I wish you the best of luck!!!

I think my toddler’s fussiness is due to her boredom. She sees the same toys in her room daily, has the same play area every day, watches her favorite show every day, goes outside….
I try to mix things up by letting her watch her show at night before bed one day, then after lunch the next, etc. but she’s getting bored.
I’m looking for good activities (or anything really) to set my daughter up with at home that don’t need to be 100% supervised.
I tried re-arranging her room to make it different and put some toys in temporary storage so I can bring them out in a few weeks and they will seem new but I need more ideas!

Your Questions About Toddler Activities Online

      Ruth asks…

Need online resouces/websites that give great advice for toddlers development/behavior guidance, learning…?

      Hello,
I’m looking for online site that can help me guide my daughter to new activities in “development”. Also sites that are good to help with behavior such as when she has a temper tantrum, how to talk to a my girl instead of just saying “no” to something she should be doing.

In other words, what are some great sites that help parents raise productive healthy toddlers?

BTW, I’ve been getting my info from Dr. Sears’s website but I need other sites since his methods don’t always work for my daughter.

      Thanks!

What are your favorite educational toys for 14 month old toddlers?

I have 14 month old identical twin girls who love to learn and seem to be little sponges right now! We have a ton of fun, bright, and educational toys but I would like some specific suggestions from experienced parents. It is hard for us to physically visit stores (going anywhere with twins is hard!), so I do most of my ordering online. Some online sights provide customer ratings and feedback, but most do not. I would like to order some new and fun toys and activities, but don’t want to waste money on items that won’t be beneficial or are poorly made. Thanks, in advance, for your help and feedback!

My daughter at that age really started to enjoy musical instruments. It can get a bit noisy around the house, but this is a great time to introduce them to it. We bought her a drum a piano keyboard and a tamborine. She still has so much fun playing all three. (she’s 2 1/2 now)

Simple printable templates for a toddler?

My son is 19 months old and I’m trying to introduce him to cutting and pasting. Obviously NOT the cutting part, as some people who are only going to read the first sentence will berate me for, but I’m cutting out shapes and having him learn how to paste things down and follow directions. I’m not a teacher, but I’m looking for a free online resource that has very simple shapes for objects. I’m thinking things like apples and bananas and ducks. All the teachers I’ve talked to say that their schools keep all these pages in stock, but my kindergarten connection is on maternity leave for a year & her cutting activities are more geared towards older kids. Does anyone know of a website that has simple objects to print for free? I’ve searched clip art and those kinds of sites, but most of them require payment and the free pictures are more complicated than I’m looking for. Thanks for your help in advance!
It only took the second person to already not pay attention to what I’m asking. I AM NOT MAKING A 19 MONTH OLD CHILD CUT PAPER!!!! Please pay attention to the question at hand. I am looking for something to have him color and paste together!!! Although there’s a lot of stupid people breeding out there, I like to think I’m not one of them.

Your Questions About Toddler Development Stages

What toys are great for my 15 month old’s development?

Hello. What toys have been the most fun, engaging and educational for the toddler stage. Specific toys, please.

        admin answers:

At that age, my kids liked shape sorting. You can buy tubs or canisters that have different-shaped openings–square, round, triangular, rectangular–that they put things of the same shapes in (sorry but I can’t remember what they were called). I think the company The First Years made them.

They liked anything with bright colors and movement.

My son is 2 and we’re trying to potty train him. He shows all the signs of being ready (not like being dirty, asks for diaper changes, wants to wear his underwear, bladder control, etc). However, no matter how badly he has to go, he won’t pee! We are putting him in underwear and watching him and asking him if he needs to go. He’ll have a ton to drink and after 45 minutes or an hour does the "pee pee dance" and we put him on his potty and he just holds it in! So, he’ll sit for a little bit and i’ll get him off and we’ll play or read and then try again. On the potty he sits there in agony trying to hold it and only by accident will squirt some. He’ll do this for hours (literally). Only once has he actually peed on purpose (after a looooong time of holding it). We go through this over and over until he is bent out of shape and I am exhausted. I don’t know what to do. As soon as i put on a diaper after a few hours of trying to get him to go potty, he soaks the diaper immediately. I just don’t get why he’s so afraid. He sees me and his daddy go all the time, he has a potty book, he knows all about it! He’s just scared to do it and I don’t know what to do to get him to just let go and pee. I’ve tried books, toys, treats, having the water running, dead silence, everything to try to get him to go, but no luck. We’ve been going through this for like 3 days now and it’s the same thing every day. I’m exhausted by the whole process. What do i do???

            Fun Toddler Activities?

…(ie- cars, building, blocks, movies, playdoh, coloring, helping mom, playing with toys, letters, numbers…and so on)

Its cold outside now, i know, but both indoor and outdoor activities are fine.

Other than random back yard playing, bubbles, dogs, swingset, sand, etc….i also take him to the park and to the local aquarium for outside the house fun.

What are some fun, inexpensive things that you do with your 2 year olds other than the same old song and dance. Just unique or creative activities you share with your toddlers. (pleasebear in mind that my son is an only child.)
